“The Legacy of Lost Things”

Published 2015.

A Note from Aida.

I love writing stories. And I love telling them. What is important to me as a writer is capturing a moment, a character, in the purest sense I know how. My first novel The Legacy of Lost Things was the story of a broken family. The characters in them, and the bonds between them were long fractured before the disappearance of the daughter, Araxi. Many readers have told me that they found the ending unsettling, like a minor chord that is left resonating.

My newest novel All the Ways We Lied is slated for release in January 2024. This novel explores the unraveling of ordinary characters in the face of a devastating loss. I remember my editor at Turner describing my characters as “dysfunctional yet lovable characters”. I hope so.

Some of my published stories are featured here as well. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them. I’m currently working on completing my short story collection Where There Can Be No Breath At All. You can read Chris Atamian’s article A Critical Exclusive: Aida Zilelian Writes the Armenian Anti-Heroine where he writes: “The novelist manages the difficult and subtle prestidigitation of examining Armenian diasporic life in a complex and exciting angle that will attract readers regardless of their background.” One in particular, The Piano, won the Lighthouse Weekly contest. Lastly, my most recently published piece On Being Armenian is part of a newly published anthology “Growing Up in an Immigrant Household: Essays by Descendants of Immigrants”.

Thank you for reading!
